How does the currency strength indicator work?

The indicator compares each of the 15 currencies with the other 14 and calculates the average percentage change in its exchange rate over a selected period. This approach helps assess a currency's position relative to the entire group, rather than just its movement within a single pair.

The rating includes USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, CAD, AUD, NZD, CNY, PLN, SEK, NOK, SGD, MXN, and ZAR. All currencies are compared on the same dates.

How to identify strong and weak currencies

The top lines of the ranking are occupied by currencies with the strongest relative performance, while the bottom lines are lagging ones. The green bar shows average strengthening against other currencies, while the red bar shows weakening.

For example, a value of +1.2% means that the currency has appreciated by 1.2% on average relative to the rest of the ranking participants. However, the change in individual currency pairs may differ from the average.

Select the appropriate comparison period:

  • Day - between the last two course publications.
  • Week - relative to data for seven calendar days prior to the last publication.
  • Month - relative to data for one calendar month prior to the last publication.

If there is no publication on the desired date, the closest previous one is used. Exact dates are shown above the rating.

How to Use the Power of Currencies in Trading

The rating helps narrow down the list of currency pairs for analysis. For example, if the euro is among the week's leaders and the dollar is among the laggards, it's worth taking a closer look at the EUR/USD chart. Then, check the trend direction, the nearest levels, and whether there are conditions for a trade based on your strategy.

Comparing weekly and monthly periods allows us to see whether the currency's relative strength is maintained over different timeframes. The daily indicator helps us notice changes in its recent dynamics. Divergences between periods require further analysis: they can indicate either a temporary pullback or a more significant shift.

The currency strength indicator can also be used when preparing currency futures trades. However, it's important to consider the quote, liquidity , and maturity of the selected contract separately.

How often is the data updated?

The calculation is based on the ECB's daily reference rates, obtained through Frankfurter. On weekends and holidays, the latest available publications are used.

This tool shows the change in relative currency strength that has already occurred. It helps you choose directions for analysis, but it doesn't determine the entry point or guarantee continued movement. Before opening a position, consider current market prices, news, and your risk tolerance.
