Managing Director Ole Andreas Halvorsen - VIKING GLOBAL INVESTORS
Many people dream of becoming traders, managers or investors, but their previous profession, which they know perfectly, does not allow them to do so.
In fact, completely different people came to the exchange - housewives, plumbers, engineers or military personnel.
The most important thing in mastering a new type of activity is not who you were before, but who you strive to become and how much effort you are willing to put into it.
However, on the stock exchange, another strong boost to your future career is having a good mentor who will be happy to share with you all of their practical experience gained over the years.
In this article, you will learn about the biography of Ole Andreas Halvorsen, who was so lucky in life that the former military man became one of the top 100 hedge fund managers on Wall Street.
He was a very strong man, a sports enthusiast, and envisioned himself as a military man, not a stock market player. To realize his plan to climb the career ladder, he enrolled in the Norwegian Naval Academy, which he successfully graduated from.
It's worth noting that he didn't serve long in the special forces, but he did manage to become the leader of a SEAL team, which is essentially a unit similar to the Navy Seals in the United States.
Studying as a means to change a specialty.
Subsequently, Andreas Halvorsen's life underwent significant changes. After visiting the United States, he completely wanted to change his life for the better and began studying at one of the prestigious educational colleges.
So the first institution for the former military man was Williams College, where he was taken to strengthen the ski team, for which he later competed in various competitions.
He subsequently graduated from college quite successfully, and in 1986 he received a bachelor's degree in economics with honors, which was incredible for a foreign athlete.
His success at Williams College opened the door to becoming a scholarship student, so he seized his opportunity and enrolled at Stanford University.
There he earned an MBA with honors. Incidentally, for his outstanding academic performance, he was awarded the Alexander Alexandrovich Robichek Prize in Finance.
Career. Mentor
A notable feature of studying at foreign universities is the fact that the diploma has enormous value, and is not obtained for the sake of the diploma itself, as is the case in most post-Soviet countries.
Ole Andreas Halvorsen's MBA opened up a number of promising avenues for him to pursue, so he couldn't help but take advantage of them.
His first job was as a consultant in Morgan Stanley's investment banking department. It was there that he gained his first experience and, most importantly, a letter of recommendation.
Halvorsen was very fortunate in his career, as he was noticed by the famous trader and manager Julian Robertson, and, moreover, he joined the trader's team and began actively managing the investment fund Tiger Management.
Julian was known as one of the most talented managers, as he managed to capitalize the fund from $8 million to $30 billion, not to mention five students who also founded their own companies.
Halvorsen's training and career progressed rapidly under Robertson's guidance, allowing him to hold positions within the fund such as analyst, chief securities officer, and even senior managing director.
However, the most valuable thing he could gain was experience, as well as connections, which he later used.

In 1999, together with a management team from Tiger, he founded his own company called Viking Global Investors.
The fund profits from the spread between buying and selling stocks in various segments, but focuses primarily on IT companies. Incidentally, the company's assets grew more than 89 percent in its first year.
Viking Global Investors currently manages approximately $26 billion, while Andreas Halvorsen's personal wealth is estimated at more than $3 billion.
