What to do if stocks fall in March 2026?

The biggest problem in trading and investing is emotions, which push us to make rash decisions.

Should I sell shares during the crisis?

Recent events have brought panic to major stock exchanges, with many investors actively selling off their securities.

I myself have been thinking about selling the riskiest stocks, which could be most affected by the war in Iran and the sharp rise in energy prices.

But the worst kind of decision-making is one made under pressure and panic. As a result, we regret our decisions and promise ourselves never to do so again.

The events in Iran have had a significant impact on major stock indices, and many investors are now asking themselves whether to sell their existing shares or wait for a correction .

We should start with which sectors will be primarily affected by the crisis:

  • Aviation and tourism
  • Logistics and maritime transport
  • Financial sector and technology
  • Chemical industry
  • Oil producing companies from the Persian Gulf region, whose activities directly depend on the stability of supplies and the political situation in the region

In general, everything that depends on stability and actively consumes energy.

But even if your portfolio includes assets from the listed categories, you should think carefully about whether to sell them now or wait out the crisis, especially if the shares are dividend-paying.

crisis sell shares 1

If you sell shares now, you immediately face capital gains taxes, sales commissions, and the potential loss of dividend payments.

But everyone must make their own decision based on their portfolio composition, investment horizon, and personal judgment. It's also important to consider whether the stocks are dividend- and whether the companies maintain stable financial performance even during a crisis.

Since most of my funds are invested in US stocks, I might sell some of the non-dividend shares, but only if the US dollar rises by at least another 5-10%. This will allow me to exchange dollars for another currency at a more favorable rate.

I plan to invest the money I receive in investments that are as protected from inflation as possible, for example, in Polish government bonds.
